TALKING GALLERIES collaborated with the Gallery Weekend Korea 2016 organizing a panel discussion that was part of the Open Talks programme. Under the title “Gallery Identity: how to find and maintain its place in today’s art ecosystem”, the TG Panel held in October 15 2016 debated around how the contemporary art gallery can find and maintain its place in today’s world. Contemporary art galleries are a key structure to accompany artists in the development of their careers and to generate new audiences for them.

The discussion revolved around questions such as: with an increasing polarization between the very big contemporary galleries and the mid- and small-sized ones, what is the future? How can galleries optimize their place in today’s environment? Is it through participation in art fairs, through associative initiatives, through gallery weekends and other such events? Is it possible for galleries to create an identity and a space for themselves, their artists and collectors without becoming a multi-national? How can galleries co-exist alongside auction houses and other ways of selling art, such as over the internet via Instagram and sites such as Artsy?
