This talk took place on Saturday, 24 February, 13-14.00 h, at Auditorio Foro, ARCOmadrid 2018.
The conversation “New Collectors in Museums: MoMA and MACBA” aimed at addressing on how young collectors get involved in the museum patronage, through the cases of leading institutions as MACBA in Barcelona and MoMA in New York.
New artistic practices are generating new ways of collecting. Collectors nowadays are more focused in sharing than in possessing, so what does collecting mean today? It no longer entails the mere acquisition of artworks; many collectors now are getting involved in the artistic processes, generating new relationships and dynamics with the artists, curators, advisors, museums and other fellow collectors. Museums such as MoMA and MACBA have specific programmes aimed at young patrons that work hand in hand for the benefit of the institution. The El Taller (at MACBA) and the Junior Associates (at MoMA) programmes are key examples of ways of engaging young collectors to the art ecosystem.
Courtney Schaefer is the Assistant Director of Affiliate Programs at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. She has been with the museum since 2013 and oversees four patron groups, managing areas such as membership, fundraising, and event planning. Weekly programs range from visits to artists’ studios, galleries, private collections, curatorial walk-throughs, and extensive travel. A graduate of The University of Virginia, Courtney studied Art History and French. She continues to support her alma matter by serving on the school’s Arts Council as well as President of the Board for the New York regional club.
Cristina López is the Director of MACBA Foundation, private non-profit organisation which mission is to create the Collection of MACBA, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona. After working 15 years as a head of Communication and Marketing in both multinational companies and public institutions, decided to focus on her passion: contemporary art. In 2013 she joined MACBA Foundation as a Communication and Fundraising Manager, and since 2016 holds the position of Director. During this time, the Foundation has increased the number of private collaborators, multiplied the sponsorship initiatives to the Museum and has intensified its work of dissemination of the richness of the Collection.
