ARCOmadrid Talk 2018

“New Collectors in Museums: MoMA and MACBA”

A talk organised by Talking Galleries for ARCOmadrid 2018

Saturday, 24 February 2018

With Courtney Schaefer (Affiliate Programs, MoMA, New York) and Cristina López (Director, Fundació MACBA, Barcelona)

This talk took place on Saturday, 24 February, 2018, as part of the Foro programme, ARCOmadrid 2018.
The conversation “New Collectors in Museums: MoMA and MACBA” aimed at addressing on how young collectors get involved in the museum patronage, through the cases of leading institutions as MACBA in Barcelona and MoMA in New York.
New artistic practices are generating new ways of collecting. Collectors nowadays are more focused in sharing than in possessing, so what does collecting mean today? It no longer entails the mere acquisition of artworks; many collectors now are getting involved in the artistic processes, generating new relationships and dynamics with the artists, curators, advisors, museums and other fellow collectors. Museums such as MoMA and MACBA have specific programmes aimed at young patrons that work hand in hand for the benefit of the institution. The El Taller (at MACBA) and the Junior Associates (at MoMA) programmes are key examples of ways of engaging young collectors to the art ecosystem.
