Matt Carey-Williams is Senior Director of Sales for Victoria Miro, a gallery with spaces in North London, Mayfair, Venice, New York and an office in Hong Kong. Mr. Carey-Williams began his career in 1997 with Sotheby’s in London as a Junior Cataloguer in the Contemporary Art department. He left in 2005, having spent four years working in Sotheby’s New York HQ, as a Senior Vice President. Mr. Carey-Williams’ career then shifted from the auction world to that of the art galleries and he worked at Gagosian Gallery in New York and Haunch of Venison in London between 2005 and 2012, managing some of those galleries’ key client relationships and working directly with several artists. Mr. Carey-Williams left Haunch of Venison as the gallery’s Senior International Director, leading its European operations (and, since the gallery was part of Christie’s, as a Senior Director of Christie’s International as well) to join White Cube as a Director. In 2015 Mr. Carey-Williams left White Cube to become the Deputy Chairman of Phillips auction house in London. At the end of 2018 he joined Victoria Miro. Mr. Carey-Williams’ principal concerns have been to marry the interests of artists with those of collectors and institutions around the world. Mr. Carey-Williams is a published writer and has lectured on numerous subjects related to contemporary art and the art market over the past twenty years. He graduated from The University of Birmingham with a First in English Literature and History of Art and was the inaugural Derek Shrub Memorial Scholar at the Sotheby’s Institute where he gained his Masters, with Distinction, in Contemporary Art History and Theory.
