Victor Gisler founded Mai 36 Galerie in Lucerne in 1987, moving the gallery to Zurich six years later. For almost four decades, he has developed an international contemporary art programme while maintaining long-standing relationships with many artists he began working with early in their careers, including John Baldessari, General Idea, Robert Mapplethorpe, Matt Mullican, Thomas Ruff and Lawrence Weiner. Over the years, the programme has continued to evolve, incorporating younger generations of artists as well as voices from Southern Europe and Latin America. Mai 36 Galerie has worked closely with museums and public institutions worldwide and maintains a strong presence at major international art fairs. Gisler also served on the Art Basel Committee for twelve years, until 2009. In recent years, his son Henri Gisler has joined the gallery as director, introducing a new generation of artists to the programme. Born in Switzerland in 1960, Gisler has a long-standing passion for art, architecture and modern design.
